Wilbert E. “Will” Smutz, died Tuesday, May 24, 2016 Former Chevrolet dealer in Eden, N.Y. Born July 2, 1927 to Maurice J. and Ida Howell Smutz. He joined the infantry at age seventeen during World War Two and fought in France, Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia, earning two battle stars and the Combat Infantry Badge. Discharged in 1946, he finished high school in one semester and attended Bryant and Stratton College where he met his future wife, Rosemary E. Meidel. They were married in 1949 and have three sons, Michael M. (John Sullivan), Patrick J. (Susie), and Daniel D. (MIchael James)Smutz. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Grace Frances (Richard Templin) and Patrick E. (Marisela) Smutz, and three great grandchildren. Will owned Howell-Smutz Chevrolet for over twenty-five years. He and his wife were both licensed airplane pilots and enjoyed hunting and traveling throughout the United States and Europe. Will was a life member of the American Legion Newell Faulkner Post 880, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8625, the National Rifle Association, and the 26th Infantry Association. He was a 10-year member of Eden’s first organized police department. Family invites friends to call at the Laing Funeral Home Inc. 2724 W. Church St. Eden on Friday, May 27 th from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, May 28th at 10am in Immaculate Conception Church, Eden. Flowers gratefully declined. Memorial may be made to Eden Rescue Squad Box 111, Eden.
