Obituary of Thomas A. Schmittendorf

homas A. Schmittendorf, age 70, of Hamburg, NY, died Wednesday, October 16, 2013 He was born on November 23, 1942 in Buffalo, NY; the son of late Edward and Ruth Schmittendorf. He was an insurance broker and avid sportsman. Tom graduated from Eden High School in 1962. He joined the Army and served in the Army Security Agency stationed in England and Turkey. He returned to Eden in 1969 and began selling insurance. He worked for several companies including Mutual of N.Y. and later opened his own insurance agency called Schmittendorf Insurance Agency. He married Karen Thomas in 1971 and moved to Hamburg. Tom thought of hunting as his second love and he shot many trophy deer. He traveled to Alaska, and Colorado many times and bagged elk, moose, bear, wolf and full curl Dahl sheep. He enjoyed spending time golfing, fishing and boating. He traveled extensively with his wife Karen to all fifty states, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, and South America. Survived by his loving wife Karen (Thomas) Schmittendorf, brother James Schmittendorf of Alabama, late brother Edward Schmittendorf (Cheryl) and many nieces and nephews.
