CLYDE R. WELCH, JR.
CLYDE R. WELCH, JR. PASSED AWAY ON AUGUST 20TH, 2014. HE WAS BORN ON APRIL 9TH , 1926. CLYDE WAS THE LAST DESCENDANT OF THE JOHN WELCH FAMILY WHO CAME TO EDEN, N.Y. IN 1809. JOHN WELCH WAS ONE OF THE FIRST TO SETTLE IN EDEN. BACK IN 1810, JOHN WELCH HAD WALKED TO BATAVIA TO PURCHASE HIS PROPERTY WHICH INCLUDED ALL THE LAND IN THE NORTHERN END OF THE TOWN OF EDEN. JOHN BUILT ONE OF THE FIRST FRAME HOUSES IN EDEN ON THE PROPERTY AT 8326 NORTH MAIN STREET.
CLYDE, JR. WOULD BE THE FIFTH GENERATION OF THE JOHN WELCH FAMILY TO LIVE AT 8326 NORTH MAIN STREET. CLYDE, JR. AND HIS DAD, CLYDE, HAD A DAIRY AND VEGETABLE FARM AND GRAPE FIELDS ON SOME OF THE MOST FERTILE SOIL IN THE TOWN OF EDEN. AFTER HIS DAD, CLYDE, DIED, CLYDE, JR. CONTINUED TO GROW GRAPES, HOWEVER, HE WOULD EVENTUALLY GIVE UP FARMING AND WORK FOR WEINAR BROTHERS IN CONSTRUCTION WHERE HE WORKED UNTIL HE RETIRED.
CLYDE, JR. AND HIS WIFE, DOROTHA, LIVED IN THIS HOUSE UNTIL 2006 WHEN THEY MOVED INTO THE WELCH VILLAGE WHICH HAS SEVERAL APARTMENT BUILDINGS AND WAS BUIILT ON PART OF ORIGINAL WELCH FARM.
THE HOMESTEAD IS NOW THE “EDEN REGIONAL FARM MUSEUM”. THIS HOUSE WILL BE PRESERVED FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS TO LEARN ABOUT FARMING AND INFORMATION ABOUT THE TOWN OF EDEN.
CLYDE, JR. IS SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE, DOROTHA WELCH. FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS ARE PRIVATE.
