Obituary of Jean A. Miller

Jean A. Miller (nee: Hornberger) age 99, of Hamburg, New York, died Tuesday, April 12, 2016 in Absolut Care of Eden. Jean married Alfred H. Miller of Eden, New York in 1940. They made their permanent home in Hamburg, New York. Their son, Allen lives with his wife Candy in southern New Jersey. Their daughters; Jeanee Simpson of Baltimore and Judee Brandt of Charleston, NC have 4 children: Lily, Stevie, Rosie and Coleman. Jean enjoyed her great grandchildren and was very proud of them. For more than 40 years jean managed her father’s gladiolus business, in which she took great pride in. Fresh-cut flowers were sold from their location on Clark Street in Hamburg, NY. In winter the business turned into a mail-order and bulbs were shipped worldwide. Jean’s father hybridized several new gladiolus varieties that received acclaim from professional growers internationally. “Aflame” and “Mrs. F.C. Hornberger” were two of these originations. During W.W.II Jean volunteered as an aircraft spotter for enemy plans. In all of her ambitions, she insisted on putting the needs of others a head of her own. She tremendously enjoyed cooking and entertaining for family and friends. One of her greatest joys was to raise a large vegetable garden, then give away as many fruits and vegetables to her neighbors and friends. Jean is predeceased by her husband in 1991. She was fortunate to remain in her own home until the age of 98, always keeping a beautiful yard and garden. In her last two years, she moved into assisted living in Eden, so she could be near her husband’s family and her life-long friends. A Graveside service will be held at 12:30PM on Friday, April 15 at Hillcrest Cemetery, 5223 Abbott Rd., Hamburg. Memorials may be made to Eden Community Foundation P.O. Box 96, Eden, NY.
