George C. Maue, better known to his friends as "Skip" and to his students as "Coach", died May 3rd at the age of 71. He was a resident of Silver Creek, New York. He was born December 5, 1939, in Buffalo, NY, the son of the late Charles J. and Edna A. (Luksch) Maue. Skip graduated from Frontier High School in 1957 and the University of Buffalo in 1961. He married his loving wife, Rebecca D. Morrow, on July 24, 1966 in East Cleveland, Ohio. They were married for 45 years. Skip will be remembered as "Coach" to many as he started his carrier at Lake Shore Central School in 1963, coached at Lehigh University in 1966 and completed his Physical Education Career at Lake Shore Central School retiring in 1995. He was the Lake Shore Varsity Football Coach from 1963 to 1965 and then again from 1967-1978. His overall record included 72 wins, 37 loses and 7 ties. He brought the team to ECIC Divisional Championships in 1965, 1969, 1971, 1976, and 1977. His 1976 team was undefeated. Skip also won the Western New York Coach of the Year in 1976. Skip will be remembered for playing tailback and defensive back on the University of Buffalo Bulls Football Team. With an 8 and 1 record the team won the Lambert Cup in 1958. The team was invited to play Florida State in the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando, but turned down the bid after they learned that their African-Americans teammates would not be allowed to play. A filmmaker of Buffalo decided he would do a documentary of the 1958 team, calling it "Together We Stand." Skip was inducted into the Town of Evans Hall of Fame. and the Frontier Central Sports Hall of Fame. He also played baseball for the Buffalo Suburban League for many years. He had numerous talents which included being a low handicap golfer at Tri-County Club, being a trout angler who tied his own flies, and being a member of the Shadagee Hunt Club. He loved to hunt small game with his golden retriever. He is survived by his loving wife, Rebecca his daughter; Jennifer Rebecca (Paul Anthony) D'Alessandro; his son, John David (Diana Cummings Maue) Maue, his grandchildren; Liliana Rebecca D'Alessandro, Daniel Cummings Maue and Jacob Wesley Maue. Also surviving is his sister; Patricia (Jake) Burger; two nephews, three nieces, and ten great nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends Friday, May 6, 2011 from 7PM-9PM and then Saturday, May 7, 2011 from 9:30AM to 10:30 AM followed by a 10:30 AM Memorial Service in the Laing Funeral Home Inc. 2724 West Church Street Eden, NY(992-9172).
