Obituary of Anthony J. St. George, Jr.
Anthony St. George – Successful business owner and family man.
Anthony St.George, 84, died July 29, 2017, at his home in Eden, NY. He was born January 9, 1933, in Buffalo, NY, the only son of Anthony and Carolyn St.George. A graduate of Grover Cleveland High School he volunteered and served in the Army from 1952 to 1955. He was promoted to Sergeant and was stationed in Berlin, Germany where he served in the Honor Guard at Spandau Prison, the holding place of the highest-ranking Third Reich criminals including Rudolf Hess. Following his service he married light of his life, Maureen Kelly on August 18, 1956. He then embarked on a medical career graduating from Meyer Memorial Hospital School of Nursing on September 11, 1960. Anthony worked for the New York State Department of Health as a Registered Nurse then continued his education at Cornell University obtaining licensure as a Nursing Home Administrator. From 1966, until his retirement in 1988, he and Maureen owned and operated the St.George Nursing Home in Eden. They were happily married for 56 years until her passing in 2012.
He was a longstanding member of the Eden Chamber of Commerce and he served as a volunteer firefighter. Anthony was a passionate and skilled card player. He loved nature and the outdoors. He could out fish, out cook and out sing just about anyone. He had an uncommon sincerity and genuine ability to make others feel special. He was the family patriarch and he was so dearly loved by his grandchildren and great grandchildren that on any given evening one or more of them would be found at "Papa's" house playing cards or answering questions together on the nightly trivia show Jeopardy.
Anthony is survived by his children: John (Kathy), James (Jean), Carolyn St.George (Steven Bender Sr), Eight grandchildren: Shawn St.George (Dominique), Shannon (Brian Milligan), David St.George, Haley St.George, Joseph Hummel, Steven Bender Jr, Maureen Bender, Bridget Bender, Four great grandchildren: Jared St.George, Matthew Milligan, Rylee Milligan, John Hummel.
