All my adult life my father has written me short notes that he's put into my pocket or tucked into an envelope to send off to me along with his love.
The notes were always one-liners which he sometimes called his thought of the day. They were much deeper than that, though, and I've saved them all. Here are ten of these thoughts from my Dad which have guided my life.
1) "Always do your best and have fun."
2) "There's a fine line between laughing & crying so you might as well laugh."
3) "Today is one of the good old days you'll remember 20 years from now."
4) "I only met two people I didn't like & I was wrong about them both."
5) "Live like you know what you're doing even when you don't."
6) "If you think you can you can if you want to enough."
7) "People actually do remember what you say, so choose your words wisely."
8) "It's not how much weight you carry, it's how you carry it."
9) "Everybody's a winner but often need to be reminded of this fact."
10) "Never hesitate to tell the people you love how much you love them."
On a recent visit home my 86 year old father asked his 59 year old son: "Do you know how much I adore you?" My eyes teared up & I told him "I've never had any doubt about that Dad. I adore you, too."
"Well, pass it on" he said.
So that's what I'm doing. Passing it on. I promise to always do that Dad. You’ve taught me well. I’m going to miss you so much in this world but I’ll be continuing to do my best to practice the lessons you’ve taught me and to live as fully as you always have. I adore you, Dad! Your son, Chuck

Dear Dot, Chuck, Bob and families,
Our hearts go out to each of you today as you celebrate the life of a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
How blessed we were to know him and call him family.
We always enjoyed his light hearted jokes, his contagious smile and the love he shared in all he had.
His beautiful wife Dot of 61 years! Amazing! True life partners.
He would burst at the seams with pride when sharing updates of his sons Chuck and Bob!
Then came the glow of being a Grandfather..His admiration for his family never faltered. Not once was there sadness in his voice but always love and pride.
Know he will be deeply missed but the memories will always bring a smile to our face and a little flicker in our hearts.
We will always remember the sparkle in his kind and loving eyes and his smile.
We are proud to call him family and until we meet again...
We love you Bob.
Prayers and love to all,
Reed & Kathy (Lindsey) Johnson

Bob and I only knew each other for a short time, but our conversations were as intense and open as if we had known each other for many years. He was a spiritual man, and loved the Lord deeply. Sometimes, the private talks we had about his experiences with God brought him to tears. I wish that I could have had more time to know him, but I have faith that someday I will have all the time in the world to speak with him. You will be missed, Bob.

In my world, the word hero is an attribute reserved for sons and grandsons when they think of their fathers and grandfathers. Uncle Bob wasn't my hero but … he was my superman.
Over the course of too many years, I saw a young man who proudly wore the uniform and a quiet, thoughtful and compassionate man of deep faith who never uttered a harsh word. He never really "flew" but when opportunity knocked he would travel with aunt Dot to visit his sons. Chuck in Japan and Bobby in Florida. Family was his strength. As evidenced by the grandsons and a great grand-daughter, family was and still is everything. I'll miss the glint in his eyes when he smiled, and the soft chuckle when he told stories of days gone by. He was my superman.

Although I have lived in the same neighborhood as Bob and Dorothy for at least 30 some years, Hunter (my chocolate lab) and I only met them this year. We would meet at the end of the driveway during some of my daily walks and talk about everything and anything. I got to know Bob and Dorothy well enough to know the kind hearted people they are. I am shocked and deeply sorry to hear of Bob's passing. May God bless and keep you. You are all in out thoughts and Prayers. The Young Family

Eulogy for Bob Sandy, Departed Sept. 11, 2018.
We first met Bob and Doty Sandy during the Memorial Day Weekend in 1993. We followed Penn State International Students Ministry’s excursion trip to Niagara Falls and the Sandys hosted our 3 day 2 nights’ stay in their home. We enjoyed their hospitality much. Mom & pops Sandy were very friendly and loving. I was impressed by his gentleness with mom Doty and Grandma Pearl.
During our 3-year stay in the U.S., we visited them several times. They treated us as if we were their own children. After each visit, mom and pops would ask us to help ourselves and gave us food from their pantry. Pops would give me gas money to drive back to Penn State. I remembered in one incident, I told him that “I have money for gas”, he was kind of hurt and said: this is what we do for our children too. They had loved us as if we were their own children.
One year, when we could not travel to their home to join them for Christmas, mom & pops sent money to me for buying a Christmas ham. Such is mom & pops’ love for us and we’d always cherish this love.
After leaving the U.S. to go back to Malaysia in 1996, we kept in touch by emails and telephone. I thank God for giving me a chance to meet pops again in Feb. 2012. In fact, I had planned and booked tickets to visit Mom & Pops again on 25 Sept.2018, but it was not meant to be and I will always live with this regret that we are unable to meet on earth again a final time.
So long Pops. You were a true gentleman. Thank you for being so loving and encouraging.
Your journey on earth is done. You had fought the good fight; you have finished the race; you have kept the faith. You have earned your eternal rest.
Rest in peace Pops! Til we meet again at Jesus’ feet…
You will always be cherished and missed and never forgotten.
Your Malaysian children: Victor & Michelle, Grace, Gloria, Rachel, Joseph. Sept. 14, 2018

I am so very sorry for your loss. I have such fond memories of Mr. Sandy from my high school years.
Chuck Sandy shared that his father told him that it was his mission in life to make the people around him shine brighter, laugh harder, live better, and enjoy life more fully and that’s exactly what he did. As a teenager, I remember how sweet he was to everyone and made sure everyone felt included and easily put them at ease. I felt more comfortable talking to Mr. and Mrs. Sandy in my teenage awkwardness than just about anyone. Mr. Sandy lived his mission to make all those that came into his presence feel a little better for having passed his way. This always stayed with me, the way taking the time to talk to and really listen to a person could brighten their day. I felt heard and that I mattered. His mission became mine. My deepest, heartfelt condolences.

My family is very sorry to hear of Bobs passing. I will always remember his big personality!, and generosity. Some time ago we were at the Dunn reunion. My daughter Kadence (who is now 15) wanted something from the auction that they always did. I gave her money. She had to of been 8-9-or 10 at the time. She bid to the point she was out of money. She was upset because she was out bid and had no more money to keep going. He ran over and made sure she had the money to win the highest bid and get what it was that she wanted so bad. She was so happy! That is just one memory I had to share. What a great man! Rest In Peace, Bob
